Did Prince Harry get what he wanted?

Prince Harry recently announced that he and his wife, Meghan, would like to reduce their contribution to the Royal Family and in return take responsibility for earning their own income.

What he got was release from all royal duties, including his much-loved official military roles.

This was resolved quickly and cleanly by the Queen.

But did he get what he really wanted?



Without being privy to his internal thoughts or the negotiations, we can guess that what he really wanted was to reduce the intrusion on his wife and son by the tabloid press, which was becoming increasingly painful to him in light of memories of his mother's death.

Perhaps if he had approached his family with a well-formed request, rather than a specific proposal, he might have been able to negotiate a more satisfactory outcome.
