Director Induction Checklist

All directors should receive induction on joining the board - UK Corporate Governance Code

A well designed and delivered induction programme ensures that new directors are in a position to maximise their contribution to the leadership of the organisation from the earliest possible date.

The chairman is responsible for ensuring that directors receive a full, formal and tailored induction on joining the board, However, the company secretary, under the direction of the chairman, is responsible for facilitating the induction programme.

Induction should include:

  • Building an understanding of the nature of the company, its business and the markets in which it operates.

  • Building a link with the company's people

  • Building an understanding of the company's main relationships

  • New directors can easily be overwhelmed if required to take on too much too quickly. Induction need not be done all at once; it can be planned over an extended period to suit the general availability and particular learning style of the individual director.

    Personal considerations of new directors

Here are some issues for new directors to consider:

  • What are the challenges of the new role?

  • What do your old colleagues expect of you now?

  • How do you handle the change in status and relationships?

  • What do your new boardroom colleagues expect of you?

  • What do customers, suppliers and other stakeholders now expect?

  • How do you handle dual responsibilities if you have a management role as well as being a board member?

  • What practical steps should you take to improve your awareness, develop new skills and establish yourself in your new role?

  • How should you change the way that you trawl for information? What radio, television, newspapers and magazines should you access? Wha tsorts of things should you notice?

  • What changes do you need  to make to ensure that your continuing professional development (CPD) programme is adapted to include the governance and strategic aspects of an effective director?
